Today’s episode is one for the film fanatics. My guest is Dr. Vincent Gaine, who is a film fanatic himself, is a lecturer in cultural, media and creative industries at Kings College. Vincent’s work has focussed on mainstream cinema, looking at the ambiguous transitionary periods in a character’s journey - known scientifically as liminality. We discussed a variety of topics ranging from superheroes and Marvel to the works of Michael Mann.

#31 Dr. David Roberts - Middle Eastern Geopolitics

#31 Dr. David Roberts - Middle Eastern Geopolitics

July 16, 2020

Many of our audience have probably heard about middle eastern oil rich countries in the news for a variety of good and bad reasons. Some more so than others. But few will know the geopolitical landscape of these countries. Thats why we spoke to Dr David Roberts of Kings College. David has spent a lot of time researching and covering the middle east, in particular the small gas and oil rich nation of Qatar. He’s also written a book about this subject that provides in depth analysis. David shared some of his thoughts and insights into why different gulf states have behaved differently in the recent past and why they are locking horns at the moment.

#30 Dr. Martin Parker - Shut down the Business School

July 16, 2020

My guest on this episode is Dr Martin Parker of Bristol University, where he is the lead for the Bristol Inclusive Economy Initiative. Martin comes from a sociology background and has a particular interest in organisation - or dare I say reorganisation. His book ‘Shut Down The Business School’ was a very interesting point of discussion for me as Martin offered some of his thoughts into problems in business and society. Martin also looks at how certain organisations like the Zoo and the Circus are viewed in management studies.

#28 Dr. Alex Baratta - Perceptions of accents in UK education

#28 Dr. Alex Baratta - Perceptions of accents in UK education

July 6, 2020

Our discussion today was something that has not really been addressed as much as it should have in the past. The topic of focus was the impact of accents of education. In particular, my guest Dr. Alex Baratta shed light on how accents can impact teachers training in the UK. Alex is lecturer in language, linguistics and communication at Manchester University.

As we all know, different regions in the UK have different accents. But teachers are seldom allowed to embrace their local accents when teaching local students. Alex gives us some insights on this issue he’s been researching for quite some time.

#27 Dr. Alf Coles - Innovating the mathematics curriculum

#27 Dr. Alf Coles - Innovating the mathematics curriculum

July 2, 2020

My guest in this episode is Dr. Alf Coles who is an academic in mathematics education at Bristol University. Maths has for such a long time been either a love it or hate it kind of relationship. I’m sure we all have this idea that you’re either a numbers person or you’re not. But Alf dispels this myth in this episode. Having worked as a maths teacher then as a researcher into how maths is taught, Alf has some remarkable insights. One that stood out to me was how the use of imagery in maths in primary school can be quite confusing for students as they get into secondary! I definitely recommend this episode to everyone who has been afraid of maths in the past and those of you with children of school age.

Todays guest is Dr Oksana Gerwe from Brunel University of London. Oksana is a lecturer in international business and international marketing. She is one of the leading researchers in the field of the sharing economy – that being the model of business used by Uber, Airbnb and major tech companies. We discussed all sorts of ideas and issues that face individuals who make a living from these businesses, and how investors and big businesses will respond to this shock. Oksana also shared with me her thoughts on how, from a business perspective, individuals and companies can pull out of these difficult times. Whether you participate in the sharing economy as a freelancer of small business owner, or you’re just an onlooker, you’ll really enjoy this episode.

#23 Vally Lytra - ‘The Mother Tongue’

#23 Vally Lytra - ‘The Mother Tongue’

June 18, 2020

My guest today is Dr. Vally Lytra from Goldsmiths University of London. She is a senior lecturer in education, where her research focus is on bilingualism and biliteracy. For somebody like myself who has grown up bilingual, and for many of our listeners, this episode resonates quite deeply. Vally shares some of her thoughts and ideas on harnessing the mother tongue to improve the education experience. This of course has not been the way of thinking for many communities of migrants. For a long time it wasn’t uncommon to hear people advise against using the mother tongue of the family at home in order to strengthen their English or the language of the country where they reside. Vally also shares some thoughts on how faith can also be leveraged. I really loved listening to and learning from Vally and I’m sure you will all have something to take away from our conversation. If you haven’t done so already, please subscribe to us on Apple Podcasts, Spotify and Youtube.

This really helps us bring you more amazing work. Join us today and be part of the research revolution. The know show is podcast that aims to make sense of the world, one guest at a time. Hosted by celebrity tutor Hussain, we break down mind boggling research and challenge authors on their work and what it means to everyday life.
