Prof. John Lowe is an Associate Professor of Sanskrit in the Faculty of Oriental Studies at the University of Oxford. He talks to Hussain about how he became interested in language development, and how he came to study Sanskrit language and linguistics. He discusses the way language is so powerful, and the way written language can preserve older things, can prevent change or can undo change. Listen to hear John explore the way language changes over time, and how words are constantly changing and being remade through their translation from speech to writing. He draws on the influence texting has had here, and where this is heading. Prof. Philippe Cullet is a Professor of International and Environmental Law at SOAS University of London. He is also the convenor of the Law, Environment and Development Centre (LEDC). Prof. Adia Benton is a cultural anthropologist whose research focuses on global health, biomedicine and development/humanitarianism. She is an Associate Professor in the Department of Anthropology at Northwestern University. In this inspiring episode of The Know Show Podcast, she discusses her incredible research that touches on the often unintended consequences of global health and humanitarianism, with a particular focus on epidemics and West Africa. She talks to Hussain about her work within this that includes looking at race and humanitarian professionals, security and military paradigms during epidemics, hierarchies within this practice, and temporality in an era of anti-retroviral therapies for HIV/AIDS.
