#39 Prof. Roman Frigg - Scientific models & predictions

September 24, 2020

Hey whats up listeners, welcome back to another episode of the know show where we make the most important academic research accessible to everyone.

My guest on this episode is Professor Roman Frigg of the London School of Economics. Roman is the Director of the Centre for Philosophy of Natural and Social Science. Roman shared with me some of his work and insights on the concept of models and how they are used, and often misused in a wide range of fields. This is particularly relevant now in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic as different countries have sought to model scenarios of the virus spreading. We also discussed other topics from climate change to insurance companies predicting the likelihood of a natural disaster.

This episode will be of particular interest to anyone who is interested in understanding how so called experts make predictions.

#33 Prof. Andrew George - Ancient Mesopotamia

#33 Prof. Andrew George - Ancient Mesopotamia

August 13, 2020

Welcome to The Know Show.

The Know Show is a podcast that aims to make sense of the world, one guest at a time. Hosted by former private tutor Hussain, we break down mind-boggling academic research and challenge authors on their work.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Today’s subject is one that’s special to me personally. That’s because we’re talking about ancient Mesopotamia, which is located in my native Iraq. My guest is the erudite Prof. Andrew George of SOAS University. Andrew most notably worked on developing and authoring the translation of The Epic of Gilgamesh - which is the oldest poem known to man. His translation to date has sold a remarkable 250,000 copies. But what is more fascinating about Andrew’s work is how much in depth research he has done on the original tablets that date back several thousand years. This episode is one full of amazing stories of the past. Andrew gives us his insights on the Epic of Gilgamesh and what it means to us as humans when faced with the reality that we are mortal beings!

The Know Show is a podcast that aims to make sense of the world, one guest at a time. Hosted by former private tutor Hussain, we break down mind-boggling academic research and challenge authors on their work.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Many of our audience have probably heard about middle eastern oil rich countries in the news for a variety of good and bad reasons. Some more so than others. But few will know the geopolitical landscape of these countries. Thats why we spoke to Dr David Roberts of Kings College. David has spent a lot of time researching and covering the middle east, in particular the small gas and oil rich nation of Qatar. He’s also written a book about this subject that provides in depth analysis. David shared some of his thoughts and insights into why different gulf states have behaved differently in the recent past and why they are locking horns at the moment.

Welcome to The Know Show.

The Know Show is a podcast that aims to make sense of the world, one guest at a time. Hosted by former private tutor Hussain, we break down mind-boggling academic research and challenge authors on their work.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My guest on this episode is Dr Martin Parker of Bristol University, where he is the lead for the Bristol Inclusive Economy Initiative. Martin comes from a sociology background and has a particular interest in organisation - or dare I say reorganisation. His book ‘Shut Down The Business School’ was a very interesting point of discussion for me as Martin offered some of his thoughts into problems in business and society. Martin also looks at how certain organisations like the Zoo and the Circus are viewed in management studies.
